Lake Phoenix in Dortmund-Hörde

Lake Phoenix is one of the largest urban development projects in Germany. A local recreation area covering around 100 hectares has been created on the former site of a steelworks. Today, the lake attracts visitors who appreciate its proximity to the water.

Lake Phoenix Dortmund – New shores on historic ground

Lake Phoenix in Dortmund-Hörde is an example of successful structural change: a modern recreational area with water features, green spaces, and urban infrastructure has been created on the site of a former steelworks. With a water surface area of 24 hectares, the lake is larger than Hamburg's Binnenalster. A 3.2-kilometer circular path invites visitors to walk and cycle. In addition, NABU experts have certified that the lake has a particularly high diversity of water birds, including rare species such as the little ringed plover.

Lake Phoenix: From steel production site to recreational area

In 2001, 160 years of industrial history came to an end in Dortmund-Hörde. A few years later, extensive redevelopment work began on the site of a disused steelworks. After the city of Dortmund acquired the factory site, construction work to redesign the area began in 2005.

The goal was to create an artificial lake with a wide range of uses. In addition to sailing, paddling, and rowing, model boats can also be sailed on the lake. A lake basin was created and filled with water in May 2011. Since May 9, 2011, the site has been open to visitors as a public recreational area.

In the following years, more than 2,000 apartments were built around Lake Phoenix. In addition, over 200 companies have settled in the immediate vicinity. Today, the location is considered an example of successful urban development with a high quality of living, working, and leisure.

Hörde Harbor and Hörde Castle

Hörder Hafen is a central area on the shore of Lake Phoenix. Visitors will find small boat docks, modern residential and office buildings, and a wide range of dining options, including cafés, ice cream parlors, and snack bars.

The waterfront promenade makes the harbor area easily accessible. Walking and cycling paths run along the water and invite visitors to linger. The area offers a peaceful, maritime atmosphere and is regularly used for events.

On the eastern shore is Hörder Castle, one of the oldest buildings in the area. It was built in the 12th century as a moated castle and has been rebuilt several times over the centuries. Most recently, it served as the administrative building of a steel company. After extensive renovation, it is now open to the public and part of the new cityscape. Its location at the harbor makes it a striking historical landmark.

Family-friendly green space in Dortmund: recreation and leisure activities

Lake Phoenix is not only an important urban development project, but also a popular destination for leisure and recreation. Spacious green areas and paths stretch around the lake, inviting visitors to walk, jog, cycle, and skate. Playgrounds, boules courts, and small playing fields offer family-friendly activities for all ages.

One special leisure facility is You Point, an area for young people with an outdoor DJ booth and obstacle course. Water sports are also well catered for: several jetties allow sailing, paddling, or rowing on the lake. Whether you are looking for active recreation or a relaxing break, Lake Phoenix offers a wide range of opportunities for a break in the countryside.
