Dortmund TV Tower “Florianturm”
The Florian tower was built and opened in 1959. It is one of Dortmund's most famous buildings. With a height of 208.56 meters, it is a striking landmark in the city. At a height of 137.46 meters, there is a revolving restaurant, which is set to reopen in the summer of 2025 after being closed for several years. The tower is also listed in the Guinness Book of Records. This is thanks to an oversized tie that was attached to its shaft on its 40th anniversary.
History of the Florian Tower
The history of the Florianturm tower began in 1959. Originally, a 45-meter-high observation tower was planned for the first Federal Horticultural Show in Westfalenpark. However, the construction of a significantly taller tower became necessary because the German Federal Post Office needed an antenna. This led to the construction of the Florianturm tower, which at the time was 220.5 meters high.
To this day, the tower symbolizes technical developments in communication and is also an integral part of the city's history. It got its name from an advertising poster for the Federal Horticultural Show, which showed a miner holding a flower. He bore the name of the patron saint of gardeners: “Florian.” The name quickly caught on among the population and is still used today.
